Look After Your Inner Beauty

This article was written to answer lots of the most usually asked questions about make-over salons and hair stylists.

I am hoping you find this info helpful. I commence with a tale that I am sure, speaks for many: I'll always remember how humiliated I was when I walked out of a make-over salon with my embarrassed husband in tow, slinking all the way through a mall simply to get to our automobile and hide... I could not get out there fast enough! I instantly returned home and washed my hair out and did it again. Color, cut and styling was a total disaster! It was my first trip to a new spa.

I thought I had asked the right questions like, 'Is there a stylist there with experience working with natural kinky hair?', naturally the answer was, 'Yes'. I learned the person that has experience was just out of school and this was her first job. Have you gone through an identical experience? As a shopper, we prediction to leave the salon with a smile on our face, feel pretty and be content about our experience. It is my hope that similar eventualities can be stopped with some tips:

- If you admire someone elses hair, ask them the name of their salon and stylist. If not, then is the salon easy to get to from home or work?

- Inquire if the stylists have experience with your sort of hair. For instance, is your hair long, kinky or straight. You may find reviews online of spas in your area by zip codes.

- How does one feel when you enter a beauty salon? Are you greeted right away? Is the salon clean and inviting?

- Are the staff dressed appropriately? Do they look after their hair?

- You can supply footage of hair styles you want to the stylist. There are hair cut mags in all salons for you to test out.

- Do you like being with your stylist?

- Does the stylist ask you what you want and offer suggestions?

- Does the stylist debate shampoos, conditioners or special treatments that would improve the fitness of your hair?

Now you are all prepared for 'the look.' does the stylist give you the information you'll need on a way to maintain that style after you leave the salon? If you can answer nearly all of the questions to your satisfaction, then you have probably found a salon and a hairstylist that may make you look good. If not, get your data from the following makeover salon on your list. There is a talented hairstylist waiting just for you! It's now your turn to take this data and do something with it and then you will have a good hair day. Good luck!

Is Hereby Predicted That Beauty Products from MLM Companies Will Find Increased Regulations

Last year, I was talking to a multilevel marketing outsourcing firm which made products which were then sold to the down line of MLM companies. After looking over their operations it occurred to me that many of these products are coming from places like China because that's where they can be bought for the lowest price to maintain a high level of markup to pay the multiple commission or royalties to the up line. Even if the products were not all bought there, most of the components surely are.

Now then, because China has previously had problems with poisonous dog food, toxic protein feed, and the toothpaste issues, you can expect that those companies which produce their products in China and any non-US factory sponsored or partnered facility will have a tough time in the US in the future. Also, Procter & Gamble plans on expanding their beauty product lines in the future. That is a lot of lobbying power and corporate might pushing regulators to go after their competition.

There was an interesting article the other day in the Wall Street Journal on January 26, 2011; "At P & G, Beauty Makeover Needs to Prove It Has Legs," by Ellen Byron. Apparently during their last fiscal year Procter & Gamble brought in $27 billion in revenue during the last fiscal year, which is about one third of their total. Now then, remember that Procter & Gamble is a multinational conglomerate and they sell their goods globally, while doing the manufacturing anywhere they can, where it is the most profitable, most efficient, or makes the most sense.

Because of these issues, it seems to me that the multilevel marketing companies will find severe headwinds in the future competing on price against companies like Procter & Gamble which are expanding their organic beauty lines of products, as well as finding high seas from regulatory bodies which will be putting additional rules on imported products from emerging nations, under the guise of increased consumer protection regulations on products.

Whereas, it is very important to make sure that the consumers are protected, and the products that they use do not cause ailments, rashes of the skin, disease, toxicity, or health risks - not all of the regulations which will be put into place will actually be due to those concerns. That's not how the world works, or how the regulatory bodies in this great nation run their affairs.

Call me cynical if you will, but I see storm clouds on the horizon, and the big boys don't wish to relinquish their market share to anyone, especially a clan of network marketers who are already pushing the boundaries of ethics in their marketing. Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this.

[Under Full Disclosure: I am not involved in any MLM companies, I do not own Procter & Gamble stock presently, and I really don't care for the regulatory agencies in this country, let's just say I know too much].

Plastic Surgey: The New Beauty Norm?

This is a good topic to discuss especially now since the popularity of all the make-over shows. I have always been curious as to why people, mostly women, have this idea that they are expected to look a certain way in order to "fit in" with society.

We all would like to believe that quaint saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but how true and meaningful is that phrase when the beholder has been brainwashed, so to speak, into subscribing to the belief that beauty is the artificial look we see on glamour mags, in TV commercials, and even in some children's books? For some time now, that image has consisted mainly of white women and the "white standard of beauty".

I decided to take this question of plastic surgery and the search for beauty and see how it can affect some women in the African-American community. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, African-Americans make up only 6% of plastic surgery patients. Why is this? Do African-American women have a more positive self/body image or is it that many cannot afford it? And for the 6% who do have surgery, to which standard of beauty were they trying to aspire?

I chose to start my search for the white standard of beauty in 1960. I chose that year because at the time, a TV show was airing that sought to teach moral and societal lessons through fantastical tales.

Two episodes of this show were very telling and prophetic, and they both dealt with how society viewed beauty and the expectations placed on women to be "beautiful".

That show was, The Twilight Zone.

Beauty in 1960...

Rod Serling offered us a tale of beauties and beasts in episode #42 entitled: Eye of the Beholder.

Here's a brief synopsis of the show I found at The Twilight Zone Guide:

Janet Tyler anxiously awaits the outcome of her latest surgery. Janet, who's abnormal face has made her an outcast, has had her eleventh hospital visit - the maximum allowed by the State. If it didn't succeed, she will be sent to live in a village where others of her kind are segregated. As her bandages are removed, she is revealed to be very beautiful. The doctor draws back in horror. As the lights come on we see the others, their faces are misshapen and deformed. As Janet runs from her room crying, she runs into another of her kind, a handsome man named Walter Smith. He is in charge of an outcast village, and he assures her that she will eventually feel she belongs. He tells her to remember the old saying: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Although the show was filmed in black and white, we can clearly see that Ms. Tyler is Caucasian. The doctors appear to have darker skin, nevertheless, the idea here was that the viewers empathized with Ms. Tyler because she was the classic blonde, slender beauty commonly seen in 1960's fashion magazines.

As the show closes, the narrator speaks:

"Now the questions that come to mind. Where is this place and when is it, what kind of world where ugliness is the norm and beauty the deviation from that norm? The answer is, it doesn't make any difference. Because the old saying happens to be true. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in this year or a hundred years hence, on this planet or wherever there is human life, perhaps out among the stars. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Lesson to be learned...in the Twilight Zone."

1964: The Standard Continues

Episode #137, in Season Five, is called, "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You", and was adapted by a short story called "The Beautiful People". In this episode, we meet Marilyn, a young woman who is about to go through a rite of passage in her community. This rite is called "The Transformation" and it requires citizens to choose among several models of bodies into which they will be transformed. The message here is that this society only sees one standard of beauty and that one will not be happy unless they look and act just like everyone else. Opening Narration:

"Given the chance, what young girl wouldn't happily exchange a plain face for a lovely one? What girl could refuse the opportunity to be beautiful? For want of a better estimate, let's call it the year 2000. At any rate, imagine a time in the future when science has developed a means of giving everyone the face and body he dreams of. It may not happen tomorrow--but it happens now, in the Twilight Zone."

Once again, the beautiful people are all white and we don't see any women or men of color. What was this episode trying to tell black women about beauty? The closing narration:

Portrait of a young lady in love--with herself. Improbable? Perhaps. But in an age of plastic surgery, body building, and an infinity of cosmetics, let us hesitate to say impossible. These and other strange blessings may be waiting in the future--which after all, is the Twilight Zone."

Beauty 40 Years Later

Some aspects of beauty standards have changed, but not much. We do see more black models and beautiful black women, but when you look at the majority of the more famous ones, (Tyra, Halle, Janet, Vanessa Williams, Beyonce, a few of whom have had plastic surgery, on their noses and other body parts), you can see straight away that they have many Caucasian attributes: small, pinched noses, lighter complexion, lighter eyes, straight, lightly colored hair. It is rare that you will see a model with very dark skin, a tight afro, wide, round, larger nose, and full, large lips. Flip through any issue of Vogue or Glamour and look for that image I just described. Then look for the first image I described.

So, are black women trying to aspire to the white standard of beauty when they seek plastic surgery?

According to Cynthia Winston, assistant professor of psychology at Howard University in Washington, D.C., We really don't know much about how blacks are influenced. Most of the research focuses on perceptions related to skin color. Foe most African-Americans, perception can be shaped by their environment. For example, an African-American woman growing up in an all-white neighborhood in Nebraska may be more likely than an African-American woman raised in inner-city Detroit to compare herself with white images of beauty.

(Source: African-American Women & Plastic Surgery: Self-Improvement or Self-Hatred? By Angela D. Johnson, Sept. 2, 2003)

Now What?

I suppose, it all comes down to how one feels inside about themselves. But there is this viscous cycle of doubt that women constantly face so it's often hard to reconcile your inner voices with the outside images thrown at you everyday. Many women buy into the trends and fashions that dictate beauty. TV shows and print ads abound with images of sexy women. Fitness clubs persuade women to join not so they will lower their risk of heart disease, but so they will aspire to be beautiful on the outside. No one tries to sell things that will help them on the inside.

In the end, you can look at all of this and say that there will always be standards of beauty and those who aspire to live up those standards, and those wanting to make a profit off those standards (cosmetic companies, ad agencies, modeling agencies, fashion designers, plastic surgeons, psychotherapists). The media portrays what people want to see and apparently, it's sex and "beauty".

Beauty Tips - A Personal Makeover Takes Just 3 Simple Steps

If you're looking for a change, and you specifically want to look and feel younger, you might be surprised to hear that you can do three simple things to make yourself look and feel better. The health and beauty tips you'll learn here are easy to do, yet totally effective.

The three steps to a natural beauty makeover include diet and exercise, hair and fashion and makeup.

Let's look at the first step first - diet and exercise.

We've all heard that diet and exercise are essential to a healthy body. What you may not know is that through diet and exercise, you can help your body to age well and you can change your entire look.

With diet, you can affect weight loss, which is an automatic youth booster. (Generally, thinner people look younger than heavier people.) If you change your diet to include more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein, you will also have a positive effect on the condition and overall look of your skin.

Exercise helps to tone you and define muscle. As you age, it also helps to keep your muscles flexible and your overall body lean. In turn, you look younger because you are lean, toned and can move easily (and not slowly with stiff joints).

The second crucial step to making yourself over is paying attention to hair and fashion.

As we get older, it's common to forget about changing our hairstyle periodically and changing our overall clothing style.

But doing so is really important and here's why - when you continue wearing the same hair and clothes that you wore when you were much younger, there's nothing about you that says "fresh" and "young".

But paying attention to fashion and hair enough to make simple changes can make a huge difference in your overall look.

To affect a makeover-like change with hair and makeup, consider doing a few things. Change your hairstyle at least once a year (even if only a tiny change) and even consider a little color or highlights to freshen it up (and cover the gray, if applicable).

Also consider adding a new piece of clothing or a new accessory to your wardrobe every single season. Focus on something that's trendy or current, like a colored leather bag, or a white patent belt. Whatever seems to be the trendy thing for the season, add just a piece to your wardrobe to keep it current.

Finally, pay attention to makeup. Between hair, fashion and makeup, you can look "made over" in just hours, but often we focus on hair and clothing and forget makeup. That's a common but unfortunate mistake and here's why - changing the way you apply makeup and the beauty products and supplies you use can provide a significant benefit to you.

To create a small improvement in your looks through makeup, look through some current magazines and pay attention to what the models are wearing. Are the lips heavy and dark, or light and glossy? What about the eyes - is charcoal in right now, or pastel colors? Once you have a sense of what's current, add one or two elements to your own makeup look.

You might have thought of a helath and skin beauty makeover as a multi-step and complicated process, but if you apply these three simple tips to your life, you will look and feel better, as well as years younger. And when you do it, it feels great.

SAD Lights Versus Beauty Make Over

The use of SAD lights for depression has proven to work for many individuals and it is true to say that sustained over a period of time some people can be cured of this illness.

But what if you simply cannot be bothered with sitting in front of a lamp for an hour every day, what if your skin does not agree with it, what if the cost is prohibitively expensive for you?

Try something new.. this could be anything from walking a different route to work, trying a different loaf of bread in the supermarket, planting a different evergreen in your garden, or making yourself look different. By this I mean a make over. You don't even have to pay for these as any large department stores offer them over the counter in the hope you will buy their products afterward. You could potentially have a make over every week if you visited enough different stores, although I wouldn't advise this as the assistants may crack on to your little plan!

If you are not a die hard makeup person I would recommend using mineral makeup which gives a barely there look, but also give you a flawless looking complexion. If your skin looks radiant this will soon transgress to within you and radiance will be bursting from your pores. Ok ok, I know this sounds a bit mushy, but try it for yourself and see if a makeover give you a little lift. If it does, you can then concentrate on do it yourself and buy the recommended products.

I would love to hear from anyone who agrees with me on this.

Considerations For Choosing a Beauty Salon

It is not merely to maximize the value of your money that you should choose smartly the right beauty salons for you. Women and men alike who patronize the services of beauty salons must take into consideration that they are going to a beauty salon in order to be beautified; and to enhance their personal and physical attributes. So it is important to choose wisely which of the beauty salons will give you excellent service.

Contrary to an old perception that a visit to the salon is purely for luxury because of the usually high cost of service, nowadays there are beauty salons that offer affordable beauty services. However be extra careful in choosing a low-priced salon service for along with the cheap cost comes a substandard service whose end result may not be in accordance to what you expect.

Many are the instances when you would like to look for a new beauty salon. One is when you are not satisfied with the services of your current salon, you have just relocated to a new home and practically do not know of salon with excellent service nearby, etc.

In order to choose the best salon in town, the top possible way is to ask your friends, relatives and other people around you of their commendable beauty establishment. In most situations, referrals are the best way to address a particular concern. Looking for the best salon is one of those instances. When in doubt of a salon's reputation or just simply looking for a new one, it would be best to ask from your fellow women which salon they could recommend to you.

Aside from facial and skin treatment, beauty salons are also offering further services such as manicures and pedicures, cosmetic and make-up application, beauty makeovers and massages. Which is why in choosing a beauty salon, another important factor to consider is your purpose for visiting this salon or simply put is your current need for a beauty salon. If basic services are what you only need, then the basic and regular salons may be able to cater to your beauty requirements. If you need other complex services, choose an authentic and reputable beauty establishment.

The location of the establishment is also another contributing factor on which salon to choose. Out of practicality, most women and men at times, would choose one which is just near their home or office. The location of the salon itself also determines the cost of the services offered in that establishment. If it stands on a prime commercial area such as inside a mall or in the city area, expect a high charge for their services.

The interior decorations of the salon sometimes makes you choose it over the others especially when you feel relaxed and at eases inside the beauty shop. Although more importantly compared to the interiors, consideration must also be given to the essential facilities (stools, styling chairs, hair steamers, facial and massage beds, etc) inside a salon so you'll know they could professionally cater to your beauty needs. Choose a salon that is clean, whose staff are friendly and one which displays professional credentials.

Are You Considering a Beauty Makeover?

Are you tired of the way you look? Feel like you need a change, a refreshing new look?

Some call it vanity, but studies have proven that your physical appearance has a strong impact on your self-confidence. Leaving the house in the morning with your hair and makeup just right and an outfit that you feel attractive in, sets the mood for the rest of the day. On the other hand, if you feel unattractive, you are less likely to be outgoing and spontaneous.

One of the first things that people notice is hair. If you have healthy, striking hair and a great haircut, people take notice. If you have unmanaged hair, you are less likely to be noticed, and people naturally assume that you don't care about your appearance.

You may not realize this, but your hairstyle says a lot about your personality. Amazingly, there are quite a bit of people with hairstyles that don't truly match their personality. Which is one of the main reasons people get bored with their look and decide to make changes. But not just in their hairstyle, but their overall personal style.

Beauty is an important element of life, especially to women. Some women go to drastic measures to obtain the beauty that they think will make them happy. On the other hand, many are afraid to make those drastic changes. For these women, a new hairstyle, a simple makeover or a complete change in their appearance and wardrobe is what they need to feel youthful and beautiful again.

Makeovers aren't just for those who feel like they need a refreshing change; they are amazing stress relievers. Most makeovers include facials with head and neck massages; pedicures with calf massages; manicures with forearm massages. Your makeover will be more than just a makeover; it will be highly therapeutic, promoting good health.

With this economy and how hard everyone is working to maintain their quality of life, I think we all have forgotten to have fun. Makeovers are fun! Whether its the perfect Saturday afternoon with the girls, or just your private escape, there's just something exciting and relaxing about getting a makeover.

If you have decided that a makeover is just what you need, then do a little research into the spas and salons in your area. If you think you would more comfortable to have your makeover at home, ask the spa/salon it they provide at-home makeovers. Most independent beauticians are more than willing to accommodate you, at a relatively affordable cost.

So if you feel a bit tired, over worked, stressed out, or simply bored with the way you look, go ahead and indulge yourself, you may find that a makeover is the way to go!

Beauty and Simple Steps For Style Reinvention

Every once in a while, everybody starts longing for a little bit of change. Life gets a little too routine, and maybe you get tired of looking and acting the same way all the time. If you know this feeling, you're certainly not alone. In fact, personal stylists talk about this as a well-known stage that everyone goes through from time to time. They prefer to think of it not as a fundamental change of who you are, but as a "reinvention." And it's easier than you may think. Here's what you do.

1. Set your sights. Before you can start your personal style reinvention, you have to know what you're going for. If you wing it and don't think it out in advance, you'll end up with a patchwork style that you're not fully comfortable with. So, first of all, use your imagination. Picture in your mind what you want to look like, and even take notes if it helps. Secondly, go through websites and magazines for inspiration.

Don't be afraid to incorporate others' ideas into your style. It's impossible to be completely original. Yes, the little things are essential, but style is all about the big picture. It's about what you wear over weeks and months, not just what you wear on a daily basis.

2. Out with the old. No doubt you have some items in your wardrobe that you don't like wearing anymore, yet you keep them in your clothing rotation because they're there and you're accustomed to them. Now is the time to go through your wardrobe and get rid of these things.

Look at all of your articles of clothing and think about how it makes you feel to wear them. If wearing them still seems a little fun and exciting, hold on to them. But those items that you're no longer comfortable with? Bag them up and give them to charity.

3. Spend a little. It's not easy to do a reinvention when economic times are tough, so make sure you wait until you have a little extra cash set aside to invest in your new look. It doesn't have to be a huge amount-just enough for a couple of outfits to start, and maybe an accessory or two. All you're going to do for now is create your foundation. You're going to throw 3 or 4 new items into your wardrobe rotation, and this is just going to be the start of an evolutionary process.

4. Body, skin, and hair. If you don't have a regular exercise regime, now's the time to commit yourself to getting and staying fit. Trust me, it will make your style reinvention so much easier if you feel good about what's happening underneath.

Now is also a great time to look at what you have in the bathroom. Are these really the products that you want to use? Maybe you should try different shampoos and conditions, different perfumes and make-up, and even a whole new grooming schedule.

And last but not least, re-do your hair. You're probably familiar with the powerful effects haircuts can have on your attitude. Take advantage of this little jolt to give you momentum in your style reinvention.

Beauty Can Be An Ugly Business

Last night I was at a show. The women looked so glamourous, and their make-up was so beautiful. Later, backstage, they looked garish and old up close.

This is a lesson that all women over thirty need to learn. Hard lines, perfectly applied streaks and dark eyeliner can look beautiful as you walk through the door at an event. But it is terrifying up close, it puts off men and women alike. It becomes a Halloween mask.

I see a real life example of this every single Friday. A woman walks by on her way to a business meeting, once a week I watch all of the men that attend my own meeting look up to admire this 50+ beauty as she walks through the door. She is dressed immaculately and she's in wonderful shape. But up close, in the words of my teenage daughter "she's a mess."

She's not Tammy Faye Baker, but she channels her. Her foundation is two shades two dark and she does a flawless job of blending at the hairline, but the demarcation at th neck makes her carefully applied cosmetics looks mask like.

She wears false eyelashes, they are too long, but when she bends down to reach for her meetings agenda, the eyelashes become obvious. It's a bit like seeing what you believe is a beautiful piece of art and getting close to find its a crayon rendering.

As we grow older and want to remain looking youthful. Less is more. It's time to invest in one of the lighter, light reflecting foundations. Blend, blend, blend should be the watch words for those of us that no longer have a perfect canvas.

Am I saying we shouldn't update our look? No! (Update by all means, go to the Trish McEvoy counter and buy one of the new color wash eyeshadows. Yves Saint Laurent offers one of the best highlighters ever made, bringing light to our faces and actually giving us a youthful look. )

I am saying less is more. Leave the heavy handed make-up to twenty year olds and their forgiving complexions. The advantage of age is discretion, our experience gives us the upper hand and remember if it would look good on the runway...it would look scary up close.

Today's Beauty Affirmation, "Today I acknowledge that aging beauty is not about covering up. It is about adding light to my best features and uncovering, not covering my beauty."

How to Give Yourself a Makeover - Tips to Give Yourself a Beauty Makeover

Every woman and man wants to look good and different. Many of us do not like ourselves the way we are, means the way we look. Makeover has become a very casual thing these days. One most important thing we must know is, it is not about the way you look, it is all about how you present and carry yourself. There are many ways by which you can get yourself a makeover and people are really madly going for getting the thing done.

Here are some suggested tips to get yourself a beauty makeover:

· Stand in front of the mirror and jot down the thing you wish to change your face and body.

· Watch your hairstyle for sometime and try imagining your face with some other styles. Do tie ups and pin downs with them and try deciding a good hairstyle for you. Rush to your favorite salon and get yourself a new look. Bold or soft, choice is yours. Check out hair magazines and find some ultimate hair do's.

· Examine the entire make up that you wear and compare it to the style that you want now. Play with your glosses. Liner, blush etc and match your style if you can with your current products. Get a complete change of your make up kit. From base to finishing get everything new. Some people like dark and some want to look sober. Choose your style and go for one. Try different shades of eye shadows and lip colour.

· Now comes the most important part of the makeover. Clothes are very important. Empty up your closet on your bed. See what clothes are waste for you and which one's you want to keep with you. Give away all the extra stuff to some needy person. Now try wearing the left overs in a different classy style. Read a style magazine to get the ideas.

· Gift yourself with some new trend body fitted clothes and hot accessories. But this all should suit your personality and must be comfortable.

· Always check that your footwear is matching or is in contrast with your outfit.
